Our spoken word theme for May is growth and will feature performances by Y.A, Sami Rhymes & The Lantern Carrier.


Y.A is an International Slam Champion, Performance Poet, Spoken Word Artist and Writer from South East London.

Renowned for delivering the kind of poetic lyricism that immediately captivates an audience, Y.A’s words transcend beyond expectation deeming her to be one of the most highly sought after spoken word artists on the UK scene.

Y.A has featured in the US hit “I Got the Mic” produced by Tina Knowles and has headlined on Sky Art's BAFTA award winning TV series “Life and Rhymes” hosted by Benjamin Zephaniah. Y.A featured along side the likes of Idris Elba and Trevor Noah at Snap.inc and PwC US DEI Summit last October and has previously performed for Edinburgh Fringe Festival, BBC radio London, Reprezent radio aswell as hosted a weekly show on Soho radio.

Sami Rhymes is a Spoken Word Artist, Poet & Author from London.

Sami also works in project management. Summer 2019 saw Sami perform for the first time after a hiatus however she started her writing journey young and had her first poem published at the age of 9. She has performed and headlined in London, nationally and abroad. She’s featured on BBC Radio London and also appeared on BAFTA winning Sky Arts TV show Life & Rhymes (S1:E3). She released her debut poetry collection 20 Something in 2020 and has contributed poems to other publications since. Sami released her debut EP "Triple Threat" on 22.2.22 and continues to create and perform for various platforms.

Manatita, a.k.a The Lantern Carrier, has been on the poetry scene for 21 years. He grew up writing poetry since aged four, but switched to inspirational and meta-physical poetry when he took up the meditative life.

Equally at home with performance pieces, Lantern Carrier has won a Hammer and Tongue (H&T) Slam, featured at BYOB, Mind Over Matter, Chocolate Poetry, Word Play and many other venues. He has been runner-up in Slams, as well as making the finals in the H&T National Final (Brighton).

Lantern Carrier has read at the famous Nuyorican Cafe and also in Nairobi, Kenya. He’s a Creative Writer, who writes short stories, essays and Flash Fiction. He is also the Author of two books, including Maxims for our Children: A look at the Teachings of Jesus, the Christ. 

Lantern Carrier is a poet who tries to serve, to bring Light, to elevate ...enlighten the understanding. He endeavours to reach the Heart; to bring wisdom to his pieces and is a specialist in nature imagery, music, light. colour and dance in their kaleidoscope of different forms.
